Now the sun is out more during these summer months, you may decide to go for more drives, especially at the weekends. This could perhaps be to the beach or to a National Trust property. However, are you prepared for if the worst happens and you break down on your summer trips?
Here are some of the top items we recommend you include within your emergency breakdown kit:
Hi-vis vests or jackets:
Wearing a hi-vis is essential to let other drivers on the road see you, especially at night time. This will encourage and warn them to slow down and avoid you, your passengers and your vehicle.
Car Warning Triangle:
The second essential item is the warning triangle. This will help alert drivers to be aware to your broken-down car before they see it.
To find out more about where to place it, and what to do when you break down, view our blog on the subject here.
Jump Leads:
The third item for our list is jump leads. If your car has broken down due to a flat battery then there is a high chance you can start it again with jump leads. All you’ll need is another driver that is willing to help you out and assist with their own car.
Car First Aid Kit:
The first aid kit is an important part of your breakdown kit, and you never know when you may need it! In your kit, you should include things such as plasters, bandages, gloves, sterile wipes and paracetamol tablets.
Power Bank:
If your phone runs out of charge, don’t risk using your car battery to charge it (If it has any juice left). Having a backup power bank can save you from some tricky situations like when you have a low battery – many power banks also include a solar power facility as well.
Snacks:
If you ever break down you may not know how long it will be until help arrives. Be sure to always pack some snacks and bottles of water to keep your energy levels topped up. The water will help to keep you hydrated, particularly if it’s hot.
Warm Clothes / Blankets:
Even though it’s summer, you may find that you break down somewhere in the shade – or nearer the end of the day when the temperature starts to drop. Having some spare clothes on board will help you remain warm in these potentially stressful situations.
Empty Fuel Can:
If you break down due to running out of fuel it helps to have an empty fuel can on board. Simply find the nearest petrol station, fill up the can and take it back to your vehicle. If it’s too long a walk back perhaps ask for assistance from the petrol station staff, or there may be someone there who is going to be driving in the same direction as your vehicle.
